The Lower Saxony Institute for Historical Coastal Research (Niedersächsisches Institut für historische Küstenforschung [NIhK]) publishes the journal Siedlungs- und Küstenforschung im südlichen Nordseegebiet (SKN) / Settlement and Coastal Research in the Southern North Sea Region (SCN). Up to vol. 32 (2008) it was entitled Probleme der Küstenforschung im südlichen Nordseegebiet (PdK). This journal presents the results of archaeological, historical-geographical, geological and botanical investigations conducted by the NIhK. It also provides a platform for related articles with regard to the entire region of the southern North Sea coast by authors who are not members of the NIhK. A complete table of contents covering vols 1-25 is included in vol. 25 (1998).

The first volume of Probleme der Küstenforschung im südlichen Nordseegebiet (PdK) was edited by Werner Haarnagel in 1940, shortly after the NIhK had been founded as Provincial Department of Clay District and Dwelling Mound Research (Provinzialstelle für Marschen- und Wurtenforschung) at the State Museum in Hanover. The first four volumes were published simultaneously as Veröffentlichungen der Urgeschichtlichen Sammlungen des Landesmuseums zu Hannover (Publications from the Prehistoric Collections of the State Museum at Hanover). Werner Haarnagel remained editor up to vol. 9 (1970). From vol. 9 (1970) to vol. 21 (1994), the editorial work was carried out by Karl-Ernst Behre. Vol. 22 (1995) was taken care of by W. Haio Zimmermann. From vol. 23 (1995), Erwin Strahl, now supported by an editorial staff, has been in charge.

Vols 1 (1940) to 19 (1992) were released by August Lax, Hildesheim. From vol. 20 (1993) to vol. 32 (2008), Probleme der Küstenforschung im südlichen Nordseegebiet (PdK) has been published by Isensee, Oldenburg. A stock of earlier volumes is still available on request via Isensee. From vol. 33 onwards Siedlungs- und Küstenforschung im südlichen Nordseegebiet (SKN) / Settlement and Coastal Research in the Southern North Sea Region (SCN) is released by VML Verlag Marie Leidorf GmbH.

Usually Siedlungs- und Küstenforschung im südlichen Nordseegebiet (SKN) / Settlement and Coastal Research in the Southern North Sea Region (SCN) is published once a year.
